Will my Total Knee or Hip Replacement set off metal detectors?
It may, depending on the strength of the metal detector. The metal used in Total Knee & Hip Replacements as well as plates and screws used to fix fractures may set off the alarms.
Your surgeon can give you a small, signed, wallet sized card indicating you have had an orthopaedic surgery with metal implants.
CASTSHow long should I expect to be in a cast after a broken bone?
Most fractures require 6-8 weeks in a cast to fully heal. This is very dependent, however, on the type of fracture, individual patient factors, and whether the fracture requires surgery.
INJECTIONS
My doctor told me I need a cortisone injection, what is this?
Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory steroid that can be very helpful in the treatment of certain orthopaedic conditions and injuries. It is given by local injection to the involved site, is often mixed with a local anesthetic for pain control, and, as a form of pain therapy, it can frequently provide complete resolution of symptoms.
OSTEOPOROSIS
I am worried about having osteoporosis. What is this and how can I be treated?
Osteoporosis is a disorder of bone and mineral metabolism causing low bone density. This results in an increased risk for fractures. A simple, painless test called a DEXA scan can measure your bone mineral density. Based on the results of this test and other risk factors, your doctor may recommend medication to help lower the risk of fracture. For more information go to the National Osteoporosis Foundation at www.nof.org.
CARPAL TUNNEL
What is Carpal Tunnel syndrome and how can it be treated?
Carpal Tunnel syndrome is the result of compression to the Median nerve causing symptoms in the hand. It is often caused by repetitive use of the hand and can be treated initially with modification of activity, nighttime use of braces, and cortisone injections. If symptoms persist an EMG test can be done to confirm the diagnosis and surgery may be recommended.
PRE-OP PHYSICAL
Why do I need a physical for surgery? I´ve never had to have one before.
Anesthesiologists require a physical to be done by your family physician so they can make sure you are healthy enough for surgery.
OFF WORK
How long will I be off work after surgery?
It depends on what type of surgery you are having and also what your job requirements are. Discuss this with your doctor.
