When arthritis of the shoulder becomes severe enough to limit work, recreation or activities of daily living, a shoulder replacement can provide relief of pain. Just like hips and knees, the shoulder can be replaced with metal and plastic implants to restore function to the shoulder.
How Can Reconstructive Orthopaedics Help?
Reconstructive Orthopaedics has extensive experience with performing shoulder replacement surgery. The procedure is followed by a period of rehabilitation, after which the goal is for the patient to have decreased pain and restored range of motion in the shoulder. Our team is committed to providing you with the best orthopaedic care, and welcomes the opportunity to provide your treatment.
Shoulder replacement surgery is performed through an incision in front of the shoulder that allows the shoulder surgeon to remove the worn and arthritic parts of the shoulder. The humeral head (ball portion of the shoulder) is cut off and a metal stem with a hemispherical metal top is placed in the bone. The arthritic glenoid bone is scraped of its arthritis surface and a plastic surface is inserted. The muscles of the shoulder are preserved so that power and motion can return after the healing is completed. After surgery, when the shoulder moves, the metal and plastic surfaces glide over each other, which is painless. In some cases when the rotator cuff has been torn and the shoulder becomes arthritic, a special shoulder implant will be used to replace the shoulder. This is known as a reverse shoulder replacement. In most cases the patient will stay in the hospital only one night. Physical therapy will start immediately and continue for a few months. Pain relief with this operation is excellent. The amount of elevation or lifting of the arm after surgery cannot be guaranteed.
Shoulder replacement surgery is a complex procedure that requires the most skilled and experienced orthopaedic care. The orthopaedic surgeons at Reconstructive Orthopaedics are here to assess your shoulder and shoulder replacement surgery options, providing you with the highest degree of care.
