The elbow allows you to position your hand closer and farther away from our body. It is a critical joint for almost all daily activities. The elbow is susceptible to a wide range of issues including sprain, strain, fracture, and dislocation. Common conditions of the elbow such as tennis elbow can be quite debilitating. Tennis elbow is a tendonitis of the outside or lateral elbow. Typically physical therapy, NSAID medications, steroid injections, and braces can help, however surgery may sometimes be required.
How Can Reconstructive Orthopaedics Help?
Reconstructive Orthopaedics has extensive experience in diagnosing elbow conditions, prescribing treatment, and performing various types of elbow surgery.
Occasionally an elbow surgery known as a lateral epicondylectomy and extensor tendon repair is necessary. Elbow arthroscopy is another minimally invasive procedure to remove painful bone spurs and loose bodies in the elbow joint. A bone spur in the back of the elbow in baseball players is one common reason that an arthroscopy of the elbow is performed.
Some of the nerves that travel down the arm can become entrapped near the elbow by a tight muscle or ligament. A commonly pinched nerve at the elbow, called the ulnar nerve, can be surgically released if numbness of the ring and small fingers becomes debilitating. The distal bicep tendon will often rupture causing weakness and disability. The distal bicep has to be fixed surgically to restore strength and function of the elbow and arm. Other conditions, such as elbow arthritis, are managed non-surgically in most cases. An elbow replacement surgery is necessary when pain and function become severely affected.
If you are experiencing problems with your elbow, it is important to see an orthopaedic professional as soon as possible for accurate diagnosis and treatment. The orthopaedic surgeons at Reconstructive Orthopaedics will assess your elbow condition, and provide you with the best course of treatment or elbow surgery.
