Treating a Broken Ankle

A painful and sometimes complex injury, a broken ankle typically occurs as the result of a misstep or sudden impact from something such as an automobile accident. Sports participation may also increase the risk of a broken ankle. Many ankle fractures are treated with a simple cast and rest to allow for proper healing. When the ankle joint is out of alignment, a surgery to repair the fracture is necessary. Often a period of time on crutches is required after a fracture of the ankle. Physical therapy after the cast is removed can help the ankle regain mobility and strength to allow for return to normal activity.
